Alrighty - so this is not news if you follow all the threads that go on around here, but an ARM version of Bodhi geared towards touch screen devices is in the works. Not setting a time line or anything like that, just want to make this post to get some more feedback from users.

Current target devices include:

  • ArchOS Gen 8 Tablets

We are going to be using Debian Squeeze ARM as a base for this version of Bodhi as I believe it will provide a better base than any Ubuntu will.

I'll be happy to try this out on my Nokia N8, when I am sure it won't break too much :o

Unfortunately I don't know that much about cell phones (or... smarterthantheuserphones) but I will give it a try. (Probably buy another one beforehand though, to be on the safe side :P)

haha.. well seen well said. Anyway, that's the challenge. B)

By the way, I think that E "geared towards touch screen devices", and for sure smarphones, is very much in line with the current main Enlightenment efforts.
Its very good that Jeff is keeping an eye on the new trends, and pushing Bodhi to be on pair with all new offerings in the market.

Interestingly Ubuntu seem to be very keen on ARM if you want to stick with a known base. They are just setting up a native ARM build system (based on OMAP4430) to compile all their packages. Not sure if this dovetails with the focus on N900 and ArchOS tablets. Link to article below:

Jeff,
I don't know if this of interest but Rasterman seems to have put the EFL libs on an N900 some time ago (if I'm reading it correctly) scroll down to the March 8, 2010 entry. Here is a link.
http://www.rasterman....php?page=News. I see some tgz files in the files section of his website that are seemingly related. Apologies if this is off topic.

After 10 hours of compiling on my N900 I have some ARMEL packages built. You can install them on a Debian Squeeze base. You can add them to your system by adding the following to your sources.list:

deb http://packages.bodhilinux.com/bodhi/ lucid armel

Please note I have yet to test these packages in depth yet - use at your own risk ;)

Cheers,
~Jeff

That really is pretty cool, Jeff. I can't believe you've made so much progress so quickly. A sweeping doff of the old chapeau to you, sir! Posted Image

Next - pretty Nube question - so the only "apps" that we will be able to run on this when you get it running are the list on the software page? how hard will it be for android apps to be ported to run on this?

Welcome to the forums, Mikerla!

That is a VERY good question. There's actually quite a lot available to run - you can install anything using apt-get or Synaptic - but what about those Android apps? Possibly they can be converted to .BOD files on an as-requested basis as other apps are now. But I don't know if that's something we can do with Android apps, and wouldn't really know how to go about discovering the answer.

But that's a REALLY good question to be asking as we forge ahead into the land of Android hardware. Thanks, Mikerla!

Not sure there is a thing as Android-Hardware.
There is hardware that needs an OS to make it useful. And that could be Windows, iOS, Android or another Linux-based OS, maybe there are even others.
People ought to be able to choose what they want on it. That choice includes the choice for apps. Having windows you are limited to apps that are available for windows, so are the apple apps and android apps. Using Bodhi based on debian leaves you with apps that come as .deb or you need to compile from source.
So far Bodhi works (as most linuxes) very well with intel and AMD processors, but not on the ARM processor or other processors especially developed for mobile. And that is what will change when Jeff succeeds his mission.

Just my two cents,
Charles

That's a fascinating link, but I'm not sure what it is. Is Alien Dalvik a subsystem like Java? Is it a library which works with Linux? Is it Java ported to Linux in a better way? I've only occasionally run Android applications on the phones of friends, so I'm not as familiar with the ups and downs as many others.

Sorry for the newbie questions, but like it or not, people with this hardware are going to want to be able to run Android applications in a way which doesn't require a lot of technical expertise. The unfamiliar platform means a lot of experienced people are going to be noobs again, so we might as well start thinking about these things.

Hi Chip, this is Hi-Tech indeed. I found a site that makes it somewhat understandable.
Back in my younger years we had these interpreters for Basic and so on. Well, Dalvik seems to be something like that.
And all this because of Intellectual Property and sh*t like that.

Cheers,
Charles.

That was a great link, Charles - thanks for sharing! It took a pretty convoluted subject and made it a lot more understandable. Wish more were like that!
