Bodhi 1.4.0 is looking good on my Dell Mini 12 netbook, but I have no wireless connection.

The hardware is Broadcom BCM4312. I briefly had Mint LDME on this little beast, and using that I got wireless working by following debian.org's instructions for Wheezy. But of course Bodhi is not based on Debian and I suppose I therefore can't do that. (Still, it does go to show that wireless doesn't need any esoteric firmware from Dell.)

I looked for Bodhi-specific advice and at first didn't find any, so then looked for Ubuntu 11.10-specific advice. The author of this page says he got his (different model) Dell to work by simply (1) getting rid of the unwanted

sudo apt-get purge broadcom-sta-common broadcom-sta-source bcmwl-kernel-source

(Done!) and then (2) installing what is needed:

sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer

b43-fwcutter was already installed, but I can't find firmware-b43-installer. (I looked with Synaptic too.) I mean, I don't know where I can download it from.

Now that I look around this forum a second time, I do see the thread Continued Broadcom wireless woes. But this is different -- he has a troublesome connection with Broadcom BCM4312, whereas I have no connection.

Or anyway, at the top centre of my screen I see a little icon of two screens with a red cross next to one. Right-clicking it brings an option "Edit Connections". Following that with "Wireless" brings a blank. I presume that I should see a list of SSIDs there but I'm new to Bodhi and Enlightenment and for all I know I've got the BCM4312-specific stuff installed properly and am missing some other essential part of the process of getting wirelessly connected.

Tips, please!

We have some good docs of our own :)

^ this always has worked for me when I needed to drop Bodhi onto a broadcom system.

Does left-clicking on the applet show you anything?
Right-clicking and going to the wireless tab shows only the SSID of connections you have made successfully in the past.

Charles, yes, I did try left-clicking before I tried right-clicking. But I have made some stunningly stupid oversights in my time.....

Excellent! Yes, I copied

sudo apt-get purge b43-fwcutter && sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r) broadcom-sta-source

into terminal, gave it my password, waited while it did its stuff, rebooted .... and now here I am, commenting wirelessly from the little Dell. Thank you!

Yesterday I brought my largest, oldest and heaviest laptop home from work. It has a Japanese keyboard and Japanese-language Windows, so it's just what's wanted by almost anybody who might work with/for me. Thanks presumably to "antivirus" software, it's a slug. I hate using it -- but it does have a large and excellent screen. Yesterday it occurred to me that nobody had used it for months and nobody was likely to do so for months. So I brought it home, in order to install Bodhi or CrunchBang or something (anything!) as an alternative -- if my regular computer suddenly went kaput, then this old machine, so resuscitated, would then be a tolerable alternative. I guessed it might warn me that it was 1 January 1970, but I had no reason to expect anything worse. So, I carried it home (pant, gasp), plugged in the power, pressed the power button, and ... nothing. It takes 19V but neither of two other 19V adapters I have here have a plug of the right diameter. So today I carry it back to my office, where I might briefly borrow some other adapter. Duh.

The new version of bcmwl-kernel-source does not work on my HP. I used the old version and put it on hold, and solved the problem

5.100.82.112 works. 6.something is broken
