Yes, the version based on 12.04 will be Bodhi Linux 2.0. It will also require a clean install.

When I was trying out different distros for my Dell 8600 laptop, I noted that distros based on Ubuntu 12.04 did not work as well...some would not even install. I may not even want to try to upgrade.

Will staying with the present version of Bodhi be OK?
If I upgrade, will there be a way to revert back to the present version?

There are no date of Bodhi 2.0 version, because there is no stable Ubuntu 12.04 version, only Betas.
Ubuntu 12.04 should come up after 14 days, so if we are lucky and Jeff will not have any problems, maybe we will get Bodhi 2.0 few days after that or maybe it will take longer, there are release cycles on Jeff's Blog, but they include only months.

I know what you mean, I was not able to install 12.04 to my laptop too, installer crashed all the time.
Staying with current will by all-right (unless Jeff removes or makes something with Bodhi repositories), but there might by no longer any new updates to it from Bodhi side, and do not know after how long this will happen also from Ubuntu 10.04 side.
Doubt that you will be able to revert changes, since you will need to do clean install, there won't by upgrades/services packes.

I don't see why not, afaik 1.x.x will be maintained till eol for 10.04LTS (Apr 2013 or 2015(server) not sure which one we're based on) at least in regard to security updates and such.

If you have a working system now, It won't stop working just because 2.0 is released. It'll just keep on going nicely B)

Sure there is, but only by reinstalling the 1.x.x version. ;)

That's what I'm not so sure about. If distros based on Ubuntu 12.04 would not install on my laptop, I am concerned that Bodhi 2.0, being based on Ubuntu 12.04, may also not run if I upgrade.

I'm not sure I follow you here, I understood your question to mean; whether it would be ok for you to continue using the present version (which would be 1.x.x). even after 2.0 has been released. The answer to this is ofc yes, if 1.4.0 is running ok on your system, it will continue to do so even after 2.0 is released as the version change is not forced upon you.

If you actually meant; will my system be ok if I move to the current version (that being 2.0 in the future)? then my answer is; I don't know, testing will tell. If it initially does not work, I'm confident that with a little patience we will be able to help you get it to work ;)

Don't expect 2.0.0 as a "stable" release before June. A fresh Ubuntu base means we will need a full Alpha-Beta-RC-Stable (expect alphas is May) cycle which takes some time.

Beyond that if the past is any indication Ubuntu releases are generally far from "stable" until a couple months after their official release.

@Jeff, thanks for the update. I'm curious to see how it works out with 12.04 as base.

Yes, this is what I was thinking. It appears that Ubuntu 12.04 does not work well on my laptop. It sounds like I should be able to keep what I have for one to three years. After that time, who knows?

Can someone tell me if Bodhi is based on the 10.04 server version (supported until 2015) or the standard version (supported thru 2013) that Meji_D mentioned?

Thanks Jeff. but isn't it possible to start developing the bodhi in parallel with ubuntu? for example, start alfa version of bodhi with ubuntu beta.
i think some other distroes such as Mint do this.

The Linux Mint developers full time job is working on Linux Mint.

I on the other hand am a graduate student who also works 30 hours a week. I addition to starting 2.x.y series I still need to maintain 1.x.y versions. Myself and all of the Bodhi team are volunteers - not employees :)

I've planned our next releases for a times when I have extra time to spare.

Jeff you and your team take all the time you need, your work is worth the wait.I think we all need to remember the fact that this is all free for us but it costs you and your team alot of hours of your time, and time is money. So Thank You!! guys and gals.
Besides what is the big rush? It took .4 versions to get to the excellent state we are at now, and I'm not sure I want to just start all over with a fresh install.
1.0 ->-> 1.4 still impressed!

Dual boot with 1.4 for a while. If you find 2.0 better, delete the 1.4 partition.....or vice versa.
