Article: End of Windows XP support era signals beginning of security nightmare

Another blogger suggests making it Open Source, wouldn't that be cool! But of course I would assume Microsft would never do that.

Article: Microsoft, Instead of Turning the Lights Off on XP, Make it Open Source

Such a shame too (although apparently it has been talked about for the past 3 years) because I really liked XP, and now people must pay to upgrade.

I have XP installed on my desktop along with Bodhi, and both OS' get used equally as much. My wife uses XP and I use Bodhi mostly. But I wonder if XP will be safe to use after 2014? She really likes XP but I guess it is still 2 years away. Could update it I guess to Windows 9 (lol) when it comes out.

I'm still adamantly waiting for RealOS to move forward, mainly for USB support. But it is still in alpha stage after all. Ahh, Open source windows sounds good.

Just thought I'd share, as I thought this was an interesting subject. B) Any thoughts/opinions about this?

There is an easy way to overcome this problem.
Change to Bodhi, install Virtualbox, run Windows XP in Virtualbox but don't connect to the internet, do that in Bodhi.
This day is almost over, tomorrow the sun will shine .
Until it does, trust GOD above, and take ONE DAY AT A TIME!

Win XP was suppose to get an end-of-life in 2010 - odds are they will extend it again.

It was never extended, Jeff.... they suspended support for residential users in 2010, and the 2014 date is for corporate installations that will go EOL.

They always offer extended support contracts for corporate types... case in point, I'm typing this on my XP-based work machine right now. >.<

I can't see it becoming open source. It's not going quietly though and apparently just increased it's market share

Quote From Linked Article...
'It's a safe bet that come April 2014, hackers will specifically target XP knowing that many installations are no longer being patched or protected.'
Think of this sentence as a deep and meaningful saying, or an extremely witty phrase.

When the netbook came to the market the only OS they could deliver for it was XP, the others were to heavy. So, after consumer protests, they decided to give XP more lifetime for everybody instead of stopping support in 2010.

WRONG. Mainstream support for Windows XP ended in 2010 for all users, extended support (security fixes only) will end in 2014 for all users. I used Windows XP up until 2011 and I was still getting bug fixes and updates then.
