Back then, a distro like Mandriva allowed one to pick 3 types of install: desktop user (multimedia-friendly), developer (the works), and server (headless rig). In each one, you'd then be presented with a list of the things that will be installed, in case you had to fine tune and add some more depending on which programming languages one were to work in. There would be an option to skip this custom mode too. So in developer, we'd also have the compilers and kernel headers; your final setup would be ready for any configure-make-make install that most apps have.

Might be a good idea, but may not be feasible for the direction Bodhi is going. It could make Bodhi as friendly as they come. My 0.02

Bodhi gives only base, the stuff you install after, is up to you. For thouse who want to go straight to some direction, there are packages at appcenter:

Although these packages are good for new users, but the best choice is to install what you need manually. Since Bodhi is very minimal, it is good start for such thinks (OS directed for doing some thing only).

I doubt that Bodhi will ever go to DVD version which allow to select such profiles, unless Timmy makes something with Bloathi version of his.

I don't think a version like that would ever make it as a Bodhi release, as it would not be "minimal".
But there could be a script on the Appcenter for installing developer tools. First thing that comes to my mind is:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)
But of course you could come up with some more useful packages and all would be installed in one session.

Just my 4 cents (a lot of inflation going on here :) )

I like Bodhi the way it is. Whatever extra I need to install I do it myself. As far as a dev distro that sorta depends on what one is doing. A python programmer has completely different needs than a C, java or php developer. Because of this and the sheer number of both programming languages and libraries/modules a programmer may or may not need I see no way to really set up a development distro.

I agree even though I am a new user and dont know as much about it as seasoned vets. I like it the way it is. Let me pick and choose what I want and dont want. I dont need the extra bloatware and unneccessaries that other distros tend to "cram" down users throats. Thats one reason I got away from them.

I completely agree. Bodhi as is (without installing anything from the appcenter or synaptic) is surprisingly functional. As a Python programmer, I really wouldn't have to install anything more. Naturally I do but I really like the flexibility of doing so as my own peculiar tastes dictate.
