In a terminal, type:

uname -a

btw, have you verified the card reader is enabled in BIOS?

3.2.0.19-generic #30 SMP mar 20.
and yes the SD card is enabled (and workiing; I can boot from this drive but after the initial start the system stalls)

A big thank you to everyone who contributes to Bodhi Linux

Researching the subject I've found that this SD reader problem is not entirely uncommon on eee devices.

It seems the problem arises from the eee devices being deliberately underclocked from factory, resulting in some devices becoming borderline dysfunctional over time. This in turn makes them picky as to what system or version of system is installed.

The solution is to either "overclock" the device (back to CPU design speed of 900MHz) or updating the BIOS to a version where the issue is less prevalent.

Ofc the BIOS upgrade method is preferable but it seems not entirely safe on the eee series.

Before we go into an eventual BIOS update, you should try installing a different kernel from the one you are using.
2.6.32-41-generic seems to be the one least prone to show the SD problem.

to do this:

sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.32-41-generic

Reboot and choose to boot the 2.6.32-41 kernel in the grub boot screen.

Hopefully your SD card reader should now work. If not, please tell me the exact model number and BIOS version of your eee device and we'll get to work on updating the BIOS.

Good luck :)

ALL: Thanks for helping out. The trick was found in the link above and the solution I copied below:

As Jan said, it is not a bug: just change the OS Installation option in the BIOS to "Finished" and your SD reader will work fine.

Sometimes life is so simple! Now I just need to add ' solved' to my post!
