Giving EFM Some Consideration... Might be possible to move to it as the default soon

The Enlightenment File Manager (EFM) has made leaps and strides in progress lately. It is fast like all things E and very stable. It still lacks some features (such as network shares mounting) but I think it now has enough features to consider as our default file manager:

I think it is too late to consider this for our 2.0.0 release, but I am going to give it some serious thought for our first point release (2.1.0) and as always I am open to community input on this choice.

IMO that would be a very good decision. I use EFM as my main file manager and it's only once in a while that I might run into a problem that requires the use of another file manager e.g. checking the size of a folder. However, it's really fast, light and beautiful with fancy effects (when opening a pictures folder). You might want to consider keeping EFM default but also providing PCManFM ... but then again that's extra bloat.
If I were you I would have EFM as default. Hope I've helped in some way

I had never known it even existed. I've been using PCmanFM, but get forced to use Nautilus for Dropbox. Coming over from Peppermint2, I have grown accustomed to the LXDE suite of applications. I'll give it a try now though. It seems like it might be nice for my minimal requirements.

Update: I tried to test it out, but get an error msg every time I try to open it from the main menu. When I try to run it from terminal, I get this:

daniel@dslaptop:~$ enlightenment_filemanager
ERR<6396>:ecore_con ecore_con_dns.c:153 ecore_con_info_init() resconf_open: No such file or directory
ERROR: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.enlightenment.FileManager was not provided by any .service files

no clue as to the what/why on this one.

You need to load the EFM module for that command to work - it is not loaded by default in any of the Bodhi profiles currently.

I am not seeing an option to add efm either in Bodhi for Intel or Bodhi for the ARM processor Genesi Smartbook. How do we install Enlightenment File Manager (EFM)?

It is in both by default. It is under "files" in module settings right between "look" and "launcher":

How to call this EFM as default FM from Places gadget? It only works from files menu here.

@ waiter: Disbale "Custom file manager" options on Places Gadget options.

I feel EFM with some lack of features.
But
IF IS STABLE and in a logical of "Enlightenmenting" Bodhi and minimalism is correct. Even leafpad has a lack of features, but we don't want gedit or geany because we give the simplest choiche.

We have to make on our AppCenter useful packages for nautilus, Thunar, PcManFM, (Marlin?), (Bayou?), (Dolphin?) etc etc ;) .

For a better "user-friendliship" (the day of invented words) we have to make a great wiki article to explain how switch file manager (disable module, settings on places, ...).

I suppose we have to make an alias that programs that call nautilus (like DropBox) has now to call EFM: There was something similar in old Bodhi, isn'it? I remember a symlink named nautilus on /usr/bin that pointed on pcmanfm ;)

I don't find a command to launch EFM from terminal, it is possible? ;)
ok I've found the command "enlightenment_remote -efm-open-dir PATH" to launch EFM by Terminal.

Hi,

+10

A nicely & practice way if you have more than one partition/Os to never lose yourself into your HDD, by choosing differents backgrounds for each of them, and using it from "places":

But, it's difficult to sorting/ordering (?) icons as you really want :(

A +

PS: And "the last but not the least", how do you use it as root  ?

PS2: You can drag'n drop from pcmanfm to EFM, nothing appears (?) but it works ?!

I've found a little bug: if the folder name has a "&", EFM display only from what there before.
Example:
Balck&White showed Black

I am not able to choose favourite items.
/home/stefan/.e/e/fileman/favorites does not exist

I created directory called favorites. The message does not appear but I don't know how to add an item there...

It doesn't seem able to set the execute bit, either....

That being said, it seems to work ok. I'd stick with pcmanfm, but I don't mind installing it as a package after the fact as long as it's available. It actually looks better than pcmanfm, but I have network shares I need to access, and don't want to have to create mount points/install samba to do it.

Although EFM would suit better the idea of Bodhi, but I think it might cause confusion to new users.
E17 it self for few first times is confusing to new users, making more, might not result good.

Personally EFM is not in the list of favorites file managers, it has few nice features, but missing by defaults, in the left side folder tree, which is really useful. Selection of icon is marked by huge indicator, which also is not helping to make it nicer.

I really do not need network for the most of the time, since it is not included also in Bodhi, this drawback even can be forgotten.

One good plus for EFM is that Places in main menu will work as it should and it should not have any missing items, since pcmanfm in most cases have 1-2 missing icons.

The heart icon, it works, but give me desktop & my sd-card, strange

Why choose betwen? Why not use each of them for dedicated works ?

It's a bit like browser's choice, personally, I've Midori private for "silent browsing" & Opera for the rest.

I'd like to make a few suggestions/requests. I think a file manager should be a file manager, not much more.

1) For example, there should be an independent way to detect, mount, and unmount removable media. I have to say I like the way windows does it here (except for the auto mount thing) There's a little icon that sits in the system tray (or in the enlightment would it could be a gadget or module on a shelf). Click on it to get a list of removable media currently inserted, greyed out if they are unmounted, solid if they are mounted. Click to toggle mount state. Bonus points if when you hover over a mounted volume it tells you it's still in use and won't let you even attempt an unmount. Also, have some cli utils that work in conjunction with the module, mounting them in the same place as they would be if toggled from the GUI, so /media, and making mount points with meaningful names, etc. None of this needs a file manager, and it also means that if I'm working in a terminal I'm one click or command away from having my device available to all my non-GUI programs and I don't have to start the file manager just to mount a device, or unmount one for that matter.

2) As far as network shares are concerned, again, I don't think it should be a file manager's problem. autofs works really well for samba, and I'm sure a similar script to auto.smb or auto.net could be written for other types of shares, especialy if combined with zeroconf or something similar. The biggest gotcha/trick is putting wins into /etc/nsswitch.conf to get the name resolution to work...

Just my 2c

EFM looks very cool - it would be great to use the "native" file manager. Lack of network share mounting is a major drawback though.

I actually really don't like pcmanfm very much (it always starts in full-icon-mode, and, as far as I can tell, there's no keyboard shortcut to quickly switch to detail-mode; it still randomly crashes; sometimes the random crashes occur when moving files, and I'm not sure what got moved and what didn't (I've started using rsync to do any critical moving/copying for this reason); etc.). Thunar is very nice, but the version available in the bodhi repository also won't mount network shares. I believe there is a newer version of Thunar which does handle network shares; I wonder if it will be in the Bodhi 2.0 repos....

No no, you can set detailed view after run. Just go to Edit-preferencies and under general tab select detailed list view...

PS: my opinion. At first I hated PCman as a default FM for Bodhi. It is similar to explorer from Windows. I use Total Commander under Win and Double commander under Linux. The truth is I get used a little bit to Pcman but I consider it to be very, very simple FM.
I need quick search (substring, not just start of name), then double panel FM, tree etc...
EFM is one level lower FM than Pcman. It's the simplest FM I know.

But if you want to set it as default, I have no problem. It is related to minimalistic idea of Bodhi. However, I will install something else.
