Greeting Herbert,
Is your WiFi set to WEP or WPA / WPA2? There has been known issues with Wicd in regards to the this issue. It seems as if the real issue with Wicd is that it is failing getting an IP address through DHCP and kicks an error stating bad password.

Also, try opening up a console and run wicd-curses. I have seen where the graphical interface gets the error you mention but when running wicd via the console, it worked.

Yes, open console and type
$ wicd-curses

Also, another question, do you have any other network clients installed for example, Network Manager. Sometimes, having multiple network clients can cause errors. If you wish to use Wicd is your primary network client, I would suggest deleting any other network client you have installed. If in fact you have another one installed. :)

Open up Synaptic package manager and see if you have Network Manager installed. If you do, uninstall if right there in Synaptic Package manager.

Were you able to run wicd-curses from the command line (terminal)?

If I remember correctly this: ad-hoc wifi means that you are setting up your wifi as an Access Point so that other computers can use your internet connection. If you want to use your wifi to connect to an Access Point you need to use the Infrastucture mode.

IMO Network Manager is a better option than WICD. Saying this without forcing you to believe me though. :)

It's short message slang, hope you will excuse me.

Out of curiosity, did you install wpa_supplicant? not sure if it's in the deps for wicd, but it's not in the deps for connman, and it can't connect to a WPA/WPA2 network without it.

It gets used automatically by the connection manager... it's wpa and wpa2 support for linux. if you don't have it installed, you will fail to connect to a wpa network, usually without an error message. :)
