I've had problems with several package installs not showing up in the menu. Right now, it's Evince, but I've had it with others as well. I have downloaded the .bod files from the website and a couple of times that has worked, but more often than not I have had to go into Synaptic to get them. Could it be because I am running in side Vbox?

Do the .bod files say they installed properly? Do you have a list of which .bod files aren't working? It is possible one or two might be bad (still working through testing them all).

I was trying to install libreoffice, evince, and gimp. Again, I tried the bod files, and it told me that it installed and I would find it under the appropriate section in the menu. But when I looked, no dice. So looked gimp up in Synaptic, and it said that it was installed. I clicked on it, reinstalled, and then it showed up.

Are the .desktop files inplace. IIRC from top of my head /usr/share/applications/ /etc/xdg/menus/ is where they should be. (might be wrong as not at Linuxbox to confirm)

Maybe try
 export XDG_MENU_PREFIX="gnome-" && export XDG_MENU_PREFIX="kde-"
if they are not default, to help capture the install of new apps.
