Hopefully they stick around, choice is always good and I like a little bit of competition. Going to give their E17 release a download later this weekend to see if there is anything we can learn from it :)

Anyone else given it a spin yet?

they again, they made an ad on irc a long time ago. checked them out but i honestly dont think they will grow much more.
seems they just throw isos out like an crazy iso baking maschine.
they have more releases than users i think. this is just the 2nd:
CD (32-bit) Gnome CD
CD (64-bit) Gnome CD
DVD (32-bit) KDE DVD
DVD (64-bit) KDE DVD
CD (32-bit) XFCE CD
CD (64-bit) XFCE CD
CD (32-bit) LXDE CD
CD (64-bit) LXDE CD
impossible to manage them all so i wont expect anything improved from their site.
but well as expectations are not reality i better give them a try.

I have Snowlinux 3 RC now, so I'll be giving it a spin to see how it is.

This one is the Debian base, right? I know there are Ubuntu-based versions as well (the MATE build if I remember right).

Interesting :)

it took forever for me to install in Virtual Box. I must say I am used to installing Bodhi. Virtual Box or not, Bodhi installs in no time :D Probably Snow was slow installing because of all the applications it comes with. Bunch of gnome stuff installed. If I were to use it most of that stuff would be history. I do however like the debian base and the installer was not too bad to use.

I am also not thrilled at the reversal of right and left click ... reminds me of another OS, lol. Composite Module loaded by default so I unloaded it. Don't need it and it slows my virtual machines down noticeably :( Also noticed a gtk theme issue, Warnings in the terminal I would need to fix if I used it.

After some changes tho I certain could use the OS and feel right at home. Hope to see it stay around.

Well , to me personally interested in this project, is pretty good.

We summarize in one word "interesting."

But to improve on the concept of E, there are now quite confusing things.
Still has a long way to go, but it's a start .

As mentioned before installing in a VM is as fast as us postal services. But running is fine, I try it next week on real hardware.

May be it will be a distro for my wife who refuses do use Bodhi cause the german localization is not that perfect, Snow does a better job here, no miracle, it is german based. Also using the big Ubuntu software center with lots of games, thunderbird out of the box makes it IMHO "wifefriendly". I keep an eye on that distro.

You should open a support thread about this - anything possible in other distros is possible in Bodhi with the right tools.

That's why I'm a Bodhi guy. All the crap they defaulted, I would need to uninstall.

I personally see no way it can make bodhi better when the devs focus on fixing every possible language, the time and afford is better invested in other areas. I use english with german keyboard thats enough for my needs.

Thats the good point in Linux/BSD, there's a distro for all kinds of preference. I tend to start with something small and put the things on top I need, others like the out of the box feeling, wife and many people I know do.

no this is actually a importand thing, there where already discussions about the "how to switch language" page. it has a few steps mentioned where i however did nothing aside from select german in the settings and everything works perfect.

Speaking of a little bit of competition, didn't Sabayon have an E17 build as well? I know Sabayon 6 did, but I'm not sure if E17 is still supported on Sabayon.

And then there's Macpup as well running E17.

So there are choices out there, however few there are that run E17. Isn't competition great? :D

What competition? Their website is down now.

Well, I gave it a spin, but I'm missing a few enlightenment things. And in their repos is one package for e17, but no extra modules. Must say, I've been running from usb (unetbootin) but it was quite fast.

Bodhi is really more fun though. :)

I gave Snowlinux 3 E17 a good spin... the final release. There were a few rough edges (granted I was running a LiveUSB session) with installing a few packages, and Synaptic didn't want to run from the menu (supposedly, another E17 distro to be named later also had this problem). But, it was nothing I couldn't work around. I must say that running a Debian base is quite different than running an Ubuntu base... especially since Ubuntu was made to be easier to run than Debian. Sure, Snowlinux comes with Firefox, but Flash is not installed by default. However, installing the flashplugin-nonfree package from APT didn't install it in Firefox. That might be an oversight I don't know about in Debian, dunno.

On the E17 side of things, Snowlinux does come with a number of E17 modules pre-installed, but almost no E17 themes (e17-stuff.org is your best friend with this distro). However, unlike Bodhi, the menu does not activate anywhere on the desktop... only because that particular mouse binding is disabled. Instead, Snowlinux installs a Start gadget in the top shelf on the left corner. Speaking of that, they make the whole desktop look and act much like the desktops in their GNOME and Xfce versions. Then again, according to the release announcement, it's supposed to have MacOSX, Classic, and GNOME looks available, but the LiveUSB default was the MacOSX look. I must say, they did a good job duplicating the look and feel of running a top panel GNOME distro in E17.

It's also built on top of Wheezy, unlike the GNOME and XFCE versions that run on top of Squeeze. Apps and stuff that are available on one may not be available on the other. So yeah, there's a bit of a learning curve if you're used to running a Squeeze-based distro (even other and previous versions of Snowlinux)

All in all, despite the LiveUSB session and a few rough edges, and once I worked my way through them, I found Snowlinux 3 E17 to be a nice distro to run. It does provide a nice Debian-based alternative to Bodhi, though not quite as refined as Bodhi. Sure the Snowlinux devs are doing a fine job with their E17 distro, but Jeff and his team of devs are doing a more brilliant job with Bodhi :)

As for other E17 alternatives:

MoonOS is dormant. Not sure what's going to happen with it. I haven't looked at Macpup yet. I also haven't looked to see if Sabayon still has an E17 version since it's supposed to be a rolling release. But, there is also this distro called AtlasX: http://www.atlasx.org/

It's another Debian-based E17 distro, although built on top of Debian Squeeze instead of Wheezy. It's a rather small distro that's barely starting out. I'm not sure if it's going to go very far, but the website is far better than it was back in April when it was added to the Distrowatch waiting list (click here for that Distrowatch issue) and when I first checked it out. The iso for it is pretty large, suggesting it may have plenty of apps pre-installed. I'll have to give it another spin and see how it is, now that I'm more versed in E17 than I was even a few months ago.

I've heard that MoonOS has continued its develop without E17, but with GNOME.

MacPup is great if you like puppy distro, I've used it. (using pup packages, loading in ram and left a single file on your hard disk (or USB) to load your system).

Sabayon does offer daily E17 isos however the E17 version is VERY outdated, and they do not even package any of the E17 extra modules. I made a request for them and a newer E17 and both were denied, as they are waiting for an official release. Really not even a bearable implementation, in fact I wouldn't even call it an implementation, but rather they slapped an old E17 over a Sabayon iso.

I remember that Moon OS dropped E17 when it came out with Moon OS 4, switching over to GNOME 2.32. But still, it's pretty much a dead distro unless someone over there decides to revive it. At least the website is still up.

That sounds more like what most distros that offer E17 do with it. Then again, I have yet to check Ubuntu's E17 support in its repos to see if it has any of the modules and other additions, nor have I checked Linux Mint DE's repos for E17 and modules and such. But what matters most is that Bodhi offers just about everything you'd need. Of course, we are an E17-centric distro :D
