My initial and first impressions about Bodhi 0.1.7:

  • Installation went without problems. When selecting during install a different language however than English it seems strange that during the install English text is shown describing the benefits of Bodhi.
Translations are underway I think, so this will be solved in one of the following versions.

  • After installation during restart the system hangs on screen with Bodhilunix.com. When the Esc key is pressed a screen shows "casper is resyncing snapshots and caching reboot files." But nothing happens. Enter reboots system. No further problems with restarting Bodhi.

  • Localization is not yet ready I guess. It was not done during install and I also have not found language packs (Bodhi-localization-dutch for example)

  • Thanks for the included leafpad text editor.

  • Gadget "Places" still does not work. hal and hal-info packages should be installed to let Places do it's thing. I would recommend to include these in the Bodhi system. Or remove Places and add dependecies to the package.

  • When starting synaptic package manager I cannot use the quick search button because the index is being updated. That takes 30-45 seconds. Is still bugging me but probably unrelated to Bodhi.

Dick

One of the most difficult issues that developers may face sometimes with Linux, its because it seems that Linux has life and a personality.

I'm refering to each of the (well stated) Dick's point, and my own experience.

1 - "When selecting during install a different language"

I was silently blaming 0.1.7 because while installing it, the language selection present in previous releases had disappear. Noe I see its just e !!!

2 - "After installation during restart the system hangs"

Here, restart works as supposedly.

3 - "When starting synaptic package manager I cannot use the quick search button because the index is being updated. That takes 30-45 seconds..."

Almost instantaneous in my experience.

So, I guess these 3 points are hardware related, something that makes it more difficult to debug and correct.

1) Work in progress. Hoping to hack them out this weekend

2) They are installed by default - not sure why the palces gadget isn't working. But FYI this is why it isn't in any profiles by default. The module itself is loaded because it is needed to show the file manager in the menu.

3) Takes 5ish seconds here. Must be hardware related.

Jeff. hal-info was installed but hal was not. After installing hal "Places" started working again. Did you forget hal?

Jeff,

Take your time with the "stable" release of Bodhi. We'll wait!
At this moment I don't find any instability of Bodhi (0.1.7) at all, not so much as Debian 6 Gnome had and OpenSuse 11.4 had...
Good luck!
