I have had a PC in my home since 1986 and have used Linux for close to 10 years. Having used Bodhi since the first development release I had hoped we finally had a Debian (Ubuntu) based Distribution from the USA that actually worked including all the latest features. When I first tried Bodhi I was able to get Google Earth working and found libdvdss2 to play Videos that I paid for on any one of my computers that I also paid for. It took some work but, that is ok. We must have dozens of Linux Distros that have everything working out of the box or with a few simple additions. For example Linux Mind that is #2 on DiatroWatch’s list. I could go on and on with the examples.PCLinuxOS is a US distro that works and always has. I know I can *force* Bodhi to accept Google Earth but, WHY? You have just short yourself in the foot. At one time I had a MIS and IT department with over 200 Engineers and Techs. I’m not a new computer user. If you look at Mint’s user base, users do not want to be “geeky cool” any more. We just want things to work. If I’m missing something that will make Bodhi usable, please let me know. I very much want it to work. The Forums are friendly and the people are very helpful. If is stays like it currently is way would anyone want to use Bodhi over Linux Mint or Ultimate or any current distro that works?

I think like many minimal installs the point is to only run what you need. If you want something else, by all means there are many out there.

Bodhi "works" just fine. There are piles of people out there that do not need (or want) restricted things like libdvdcss on their system, so Bodhi does not install it by default. This is part of what we do, we make it easy to add all these things... But that is all we will do, less is more with the Bodhi methodology. It is not about being "geeky" or making things "harder" it is about the freedom of choice.

If people want all those things by default - they are welcome to use Linux Mint. (Just note Ubuntu does not ship a lot of those same things and it is #1 folks).

Hi Alex,
If I understand you correctly you think we "shoot ourself in the foot" because we are not Linux Mint or any other distro which works ootb?
In respons to that I would like to say that we didn't intended to be a complete distro with all programs already installed. It's a minimalistic distro based on Enlightenment which is it's biggest selling point.
All the rest is up to the user who can make the decision for her or himself which programs to install. If you want all decisions already made for you Bodhi is not meant for you.

And for the record: Bodhi does work. In fact, it works very very well. You just have to make some install choices (see herefor more information).

Hopefully this helps you to understand the purpose of Bodhi better.

Jeff, If I was not a Bodhi fan or did not want to use it, I would not have bothered to write the note or asked the question. What is the answer? How do I get Bodhi to have the features I think I need. I was not being negative. I just stated a fact and asked a question.

You don't have to thank me. Thank the forum. This time I was the lucky one to understand the question correctly. The next time it will be somebody else.
Luckily the forum members are very friendly and patient. It's not possible to ask a dumb question. That was one of the reasons why I liked Bodhi so much.

Good luck with installing!

I never understand the reason why some people care to be so pushy, even using fud to try to appear credible, regarding telling others to do no matter what they have in their mind..

I had to do a little googling to know what "using fud" meant.
But, it seems that I'm immune to fud, I must be fearless! B)

Jeff,
I'm almost afraid to ask this question. Is there an easy way to install Google Earth? I have searched the forums.

Best way is from Synaptic. Try to use the search function to locate the installer.

Sorry about the Fud. I see now I' was wrong, sure you did not mean it.
Problem is me. Usually I'm paranoid about weapons: you mentioned "short yourself in the foot" and I heard shots everywhere. :( :)

The Bodhi install disc is a minimal one (for a reason) but we have various ways to install everything, my preferred one is the "get software" page.
Regarding Google Earth, I think its a very useful and popular program and it deserves a place in our "get software" place.
So, lets not fear and ask Jeff if he could add it to the "get software" page, under Extras / Educational.

Cheers

Sorry if I came off as a bit abrasive - never be afraid to ask questions round these parts :)

I think adding Google Earth to the software page is a great idea. I'll forward this note onto ottermaton/Jeff S (Also need to make sure it is in our repos).

Cheers,
~Jeff
