In Topic: Best network traffic monitor for Bodhi?

03 December 2017 - 11:19 AM

While generally true there have been plenty of times I've installed "precise" 12.04 packages on a trusty 14.04 system or earlier versions of opensuse packages on newer ones. As long as major libraries didn't change like the change from libc to glibc for example the packages worked fine. In any case I guess conky is my only solution or a console based network speed monitor.

giving conky a shot. thanks for the recommendation :)

In Topic: is there a cntrl/alt/delete for a frozen app or screen in linux?

03 December 2017 - 10:52 AM

I will answer your first question:

In Windows you call task manager. It is possible to do the same as well in linux. You can do that in terminal with htop command (better version of top command) . If you want a gui, just install exterminator. In these both apps you can kill process you need. But the beauty of Bodhi Linux with E or Moksha desktop is a set of great features under window. Sometimes if an app does not respond, press app icon, go to the window item and then near the bottom press "kill".

Enjoy

PS: if mouse freezes, you have to investigate deeper what is wrong. As I wrote in my previous post, I had to add some command to Google Chrome launcher to avoid desktop freezing. Be honest I have been using Bodhi Linux since 2011 and I can count maybe 5 times when this happened. Bodhi is very stable distro... :)

i like having exterminator running just to keep an eye on things, but htop is amazing :) thanks for the suggestion

In Topic: Hello from old (Linux) new (Bodhi) user.

Welcome, calinb, hope you find Bodhi to your liking.  My one pre-installation recommendation would be to read Jeff's and Charles' material on setting up a separate data partition. It was pretty easy to do and seems likely to be a long-term time saver.

You can find the relevant links in this post of mine.  http://forums.bodhil...w-installation/

Have fun.

thank you so much for bringing those posts back to light. i had vaguely seen some info on this, but lost it in my list of "must bookmark everything!" :)

you are never too old for learning new stuff. I have been using Linux just a few years. Still considered to be a newbie although I am 41 years old. And about you literature question:

Don't be scared with amount of pages. Just pick up what you are interested in and read. I have found this Linux bible just week ago and it looks pretty sufficient for my needs. Enjoy :)
