  1. What does acpi_osi=Linux do?

I have an intel 915 chipset, the one with backlight problems mentioned in the DistroWatch Podcast review. Even with the release of 1.3, I still get a black login after enter the login manager. Instead of using setpci, I was able to get my ASUS EeePC 1001P booting normally by adding acpi_osi=Linux to the command-line options in /etc/default/grub. What, exactly, does that do? I edited this post because I originally thought the issue was caused by pci_aspm=force.
